Denise R. Mitchell, MPA, has served as Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner since the spring of 2022. She is responsible for the timely, successful billing, collection, and disbursement of over $1.9 billion in revenue.
Prior to becoming tax commissioner, Mitchell served as the chief deputy tax commissioner. She joined the Gwinnett Tax Commissioner’s Office in 1998. Mitchell was promoted to progressively responsible positions from accounting supervisor to accounting manager and later, director of finance & accounting.
During her tenure as director of finance & accounting, Mitchell earned a statewide reputation for strong fiscal management and flawless accounting.
She held management roles in the hospitality industry prior to her career with the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s Office.
Mitchell earned a master’s degree in public administration from the Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University, and a bachelor’s degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management from Georgia State University, as well as Certified Local Government Manager and Certified Finance Officer designations from the University of Georgia.
She is a board member of the Tax Commissioners’ Technology Development Council of Georgia (TC Tech), and a member of the Georgia Tax Officials Association (GATO) and Grace Toastmasters of Snellville. For 12 years, Mitchell taught English as a Second Language; she is also a long-time volunteer with the Gwinnett Tax Team’s Relay for Life.
Mitchell has two adult daughters, one granddaughter and one grandson. She and her husband live in Snellville with Oliver, a Yorkie-Pomeranian mix.
